Safe Driving

According to as report by the National Safety Council, 28 percent of car accidents are caused by talking or texting while driving. Another recent survey, 26 percent of mobile phone users have said that they have texted while driving. Sixty percent of teenagers, typically the most dangerous of drivers, reported that they have texted while driving. Of those in their 20s, 49 percent said that they have done it. Among those in their 50s, only 13 reported texting while driving.

Driving is a skill that takes a lot of practice and experience.  Learning from mistakes and tips from other drivers can help the process.   Although teens and new drivers have significantly more accidents than other age groups there are resources available for all age groups.

Students Against Destructive Decisions is a group of students helping other students make positive decisions about challenges in the their everyday lives.  Originally founded as Students Against Driving Drunk they have expanded to cover topics that are important to our young drivers as well.

Missouri's state page provides all the information needed for testing, licensing and insurance needs.  For our older drivers AAA Foundation offers some great advice as well.

Driving Tips for All Ages

  • Do not assume what other drivers are going to do.
  • Watch out for aggressive drivers and try to stay out of their way.
  • Watch for deer and other wildlife. If you do see a deer watch for others close by - - they often travel in pairs or groups. Do not swerve to avoid wildlife unless your speed, and road conditions, allow you to do so safely.
  • Turn your headlights on any time that you need your windshield wipers on - - rain, fog, sleet or snow.  It helps increase your visibility and helps other drivers to see you.
  • In bad weather increase the distance between you and the driver in front. Brake gently and use gentle pressure when accelerating.
  • Always, ALWAYS, wear your seat belt and make sure your passengers do too.
  • Make adjustments to your seat, headrest, radio, mirrors before you start your trip.
  • Know where you are going before you leave.  Map your route, make sure you have enough gas, money for emergencies and that someone else knows as well.
